What geopolitical tensions? Bourses dismiss issues
Tensions seem to be an afterthought on the markets as investors’ long-established bullishness continues to plough on. While diplomatic efforts are being made in the bid to bring the violence in Gaza to an end, EU foreign ministers are also in discussions over toughening sanctions against Russia as a reaction to the tragedy involving Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine.
Despite this however, the last six days have seen Moscow’s Micex index rallying by 1.7%. The Russian currency, the ruble, has also risen by 0.5% against the dollar.
While this may catch some off guard, it is an attitude exhibited across the market. Risk aversion is clearly waning and traders are being aided further by numerous factors which have seen various bourses rise to record or cyclical highs. These include, an improving US economy, continued ultra-loose monetary policy by the world’s major central banks, as well as optimism over corporate earnings
In fact, according to Reuters, 66% of S&P 500 constituents have reported second-quarter earnings have beaten consensus expectations.
