Russia’s Rouble plummeted to over a 15-month low against the Dollar on Friday, weighed by domestic political risk fears.

At the time of writing the Rouble was down 0.5% against the Dollar at 88.00, after previously hitting 88.6775, the weakest level seen since the end of March last year.

In addition, Russia’s currency edged down 0.7% at 95.74 against the Euro and 0.5% against the Chinese Yuan to 12.12.

“The Rouble continues to crumble,” according to an Alor Broker note on Friday. “It lost another 1.4% in value yesterday, despite stabilising oil.

“The target for the Dollar-Rouble pair of 90 is approaching and is likely to be reached.”

Although capital controls helped to protect the Rouble against geopolitics since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, last weekend’s aborted armed mutiny shook markets and questioned President Putin's grip on power, Reuters reports.

Elsewhere, in South Africa, the Rand was flat in early trade ahead of the budget and trade figures due out on Friday.

The Rand stood at 18.7800 against the Dollar at the time of writing, not far from its previous close of 18.7725.

In addition, private sector credit in South Africa rose 6.85% year-on-year in May, according to central bank data published on Friday, whilst money supply increased 10.30% over the same time.

According to analysts surveyed by Reuters, a trade surplus of 6 billion Rand ($319.67 million) is predicted in May, surpassing April’s 3.54 billion Rand surplus.

In India, the Rupee was on track for its largest monthly gain against USD since January. Although there was little change on Friday at 82.0450 to the Dollar, the Rupee was up 0.8% for the month, following over $3.5 billion of inflows into Indian equities pushing the BSE Sensex and the Nifty 50 Index to all-time highs.
